Abstract
This novel method of adapting Web content on mobile and handheld devices provides a superior visual presentation system. Mobile devices have limited display and processing capabilities, and therefore frequently are unable to display Web pages as they would appear on full-sized computers. The introduction of Unit of Information (UOI) establishes a solid foundation for encapsulating and preserving semantic relationships and coherence between elements, such as function, typesetting, presentation relationship and literary context. The present UOI detection algorithm is effective in automatically finding UOIs in Web pages. This is accomplished by analyzing, processing, and displaying Web content using several algorithms and accompanying computer systems which implement them. The invention can be applied and customized for use in a broad range of settings and applications involving information layout adaptation and presentation across multiple platforms and devices.

Advantages:
Current content adaptation services and applications are linked to specific originating tools and/or platforms. The invention enables “develop once and use everywhere” via automatic adaptation and display on any device. The technology can be employed independently on a singular handheld or mobile device or on an external device such as a Web server, to which the handheld or mobile device would connect. The invention can be used as a standalone service or an integral part of a Web content provision server. Web content providers would not need to provide multiple versions to serve multiple receiving devices.
